Bonus Ukulele Music! Two Songs While Rich Learns Key of D!
I'm having fun learning some new chords and sounds on ukulele. Here I play Cotton Fields and Sloop John B like never before! Sounds good to me but these are still early days. Hopefully, I will be posting smoother and more complete versions of these songs later.

Where Are All The Caramel Baritone Ukuleles on Amazon?

I've always counted on Caramel tenor and baritone acoustic electric ukuleles. Looks like there may be a shortage of tenor choices and there is certainly a drastic reduction in baritones. A new way to play this song for me. I've avoided D chord long enough so now I'll be playing a song in the key of D every day for a while. I'm starting with easy ones, obviously! I need a month's practice with chords in the key of D. At the end of that time, I'm sure I'll be able to play this song much more smoothly. I'm playing Kala mango baritone ukulele tuned low G,CEA.

    Even with my small size 6, petite woman's hands, playing on a Concert ukulele, I have trouble playing a good, clean D chord. It is really hard to squeeze 3 fingers into one fret on the top three strings. I always mute one of the strings, but you don't really hear it unless you try each string separately. When I play just the top two strings, I get a good clear sound. I found one way that is supposed to make it easier. Play using your fingers middle, ring and pinkie. But, you need a good strong pinkie for that, which I don't have. We both have a same goal.

    Mr. Davis do you have an opinion on types of string? My first uke has florocarbon. This next one I bought, a concert, has nylgut. I haven't decided if I like the nylgut yet or not. Have you done any videos about this? BTW, I am a Phyllis also.

      Phyllis, I generally like whatever strings come on a ukulele and the strings I play most frequently. For the past couple of months it seems I've been playing mostly Caramel concert and tenors, newer models. These come with clear carbon strings. It looks like I will be playing baritone with Ph.D. strings, low G,CEA for a while. I like these strings too. These are different from carbon and nylgut. I find most ukuleles that I want to play I can get used to the strings and will like them just fine in a day or so. There was I time I thought Enya strings that come on Nova U soprano and concert were the best. Oh, well.

    I feel the same way about this issue as you. I do not desire a dream ukulele. I simply am not able to pay $4,200 for a Hawaiian Koa ukulele. If I did somehow acquire one, it would be impractical to have. Having to insure, protect & worry about it. As a woman who did not pick up a ukulele until slightly over 70 yrs old, self-taught for the past one year and almost eleven months with the aid of free UA-cam tutorials, able to play at "Advanced Beginner" level, I prefer people to say that I can play & sing quite a few good songs, which are not too difficult, pretty darn well. At least my brother and I enjoy hearing me play. One of my recent additions to my playlist that I have smoothed out is "Ripple" I finally got a compliment on that. My brother said he likes hearing me play "Ripple" I am trying to get him to join me on singing the chorus. "Ripple in still water. Where there is no pebble tossed . ...." But, I do admit that in the future I would like to be able to purchase a slightly more expensive ukulele than the price-point I am in presently in ($55 - 85).

    I have been using an Avery 3-ring binder for over a year to store my paper copies of music I am learning & play often on ukulele. I had upgraded from a smaller size binder. The binder has grown to 109 pieces of music. Yikes. Today I finally capitulated and organized re-arranged the pages Alphabetically, but still retaining a few sections for categories of music and using tabs to label some favorites. I love the Avery binders. My pages of music have gotten so worn that I had to put those reinforcements on the holes.

    Walmart is probably the cheapest place to find new binders - especially if you go in late August or early September durring the back to school sales. Magnetic style Trapper Keepers are back in style now as a nostalgia. 5 Star & Avery products go on sale for mere pennies on the dollar as well. I like to add Avery folder dividers tabs to sections so I can quickly organize new sheets that I have not hole punched yet. You can also still get single hinged rings (usually sold with index cards) and move the alignment of your hole punch around and get 6 or even 9 hole punched books. They also still sell those brass tabs that you insert into the holes and then flare out at the end but they are more of a craft item than a usable book making binding system in my regard. They could be a less bulky solution to binder clips. I much prefer paper copies to screens because note-taking is far easier and the screen glare can render digital version useless. I love my index cards and have found photo abulm systems at dollar stores that have pockets meant for photos that the index cards fit into. Avery sell packs of single page/index tabs that have stickers on themselves you can just add your own indexes to the sides of each page. I have repurposed my old index card accordian files to sort bandaids and coupons. I always but old file folder jackets at yard re/sales as my daughter uses a paper trimmer to cut that thick cardstock into greeting cards and small canvases.

    A rebuttal. 3 ring binders once were plentiful and cheap (often free in an office environment when vendor binders could be change by removing marketing inserts on front and binder). I was shocked to find them at $7.5 and up in “dollar store” and stationary supply store. 3 post report covers are getting rare since homework is being transmitted electronically. The ones you can get are in the $2 range. I got a second hand comb punch for $14. A box of 50 combs on eBay for $10 (shipped). That seemed economical to me. I also have a three hole punch and a laser printer. And have the capacity to remove cartridge chip so that I can use knock off toner replacements.

    You can add a table of contents, and divider tabs and more! I much prefer the b&w LASER printers and scanners. The powdered toner does not "go bad" nor is at expensive as the inkjet regills. B&W laser prints use heat to keep the ink on so you can colorize them with markers or water colors very easily. You can also coat canvas with a transfer gesso, slap a b&w laser print copy on it, let it dry, wet the paper until it rubs off and now you have a print.

    I paid $25 to have a second strap button installed on my Flight Supernatural. :O I got that Irin Walnut Tenor for cheap that I mentioned, and it did not have the strap buttons pictured in the ad...so I decided to bite the bullet and install my own. (The uke cost the same as installing one button, after all! If I wrecked it, not too big a loss.) Did it this morning and it went great! Just drill a little hole the right size in the right place and screw in the button. Then I did my Uma Concert Pineapple as well. I was a little hesitant about that, my favorite uke, but I had left it outside the gig bag or a few days and one of the cats had decided to chew the head a bit...so it wasn't like it was in pristine condition any more, anyway. Anyhow, that went well, too. I imagine it's possible to destroy a ukulele by accident, or mess it up a little by putting the hole in not quite the right place, but as long as there is a block on the end you're drilling into, it should be okay. Maybe practice on a uke or two that is not precious to you.

    • @richdavis4007
      @richdavis4007 5 днів тому

      You've taken a big step!! Super!! It would seem to me, and always has, that the neck should split when you screw a long screw into it (and they provide longer screws than are necessary, in my opinion). But uke makers are smart enough to choose wood that won't split!! This is a wonderful thing to know in advance. People should certainly practice on ukes that are expendable. I have also perfected a technique that lessens the worry and screwing. I use a push pin to make a deep hole in the uke before I start the screw. I don't use a drill at all. Plenty of videos on my channel showing how. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

    My, you really do have a large repoirtoire of easy to play & sing songs that you memorized. is that a two chord song? I think that the kitten should come first in the song. There is nothing in the world as cute as a kitten.

    • @richdavis4007
      @richdavis4007 6 днів тому

      But, but! The kitten is too easy and universal. The bunny is a bit more unusual. Anyhow, I seldom tinker with lyrics after I've memorized them! I don't know how many chords, probably 2 or 3. Choosing chords for an original song depends on how you want it to sound. If I hear something in my head that sounds exotic I'm use Dm, Gm, C7 or Am. Soon, you'll be seeing songs with G and D in my new original songs. I haven't written any that require the island strum, though I have written a couple that I intended to use that strum for. Later, I found I preferred it played other ways.

The same time I bought this I also bought several colorful Deviser concerts. These regularly sold for $99 and I got 3 for half price. I have the red for sale on FB and I'm keeping the green one.
